READING FESTIVAL TEAMS UP WITH THE SALVATION ARMY

At Reading Festival this year, organisers Festival Republic and The Salvation Army worked together to introduce a new food donation scheme.  Festival goers were asked to donate any unwanted, non-perishable food at dedicated drop-off points around the site.

Over a tonne of food was donated and collected by The Salvation Army which volunteers are using to make up and distribute over 500 food parcels to single people and families, nominated by local community groups, in time for Christmas.

On Monday 7 December The Salvation Army are hosting a Food Parcel Packing day, with volunteers including Festival Republic staff who worked at the festival, including MD, Melvin Benn, and possibly a couple of festival goers for good measure.

Reading Festival enjoys a long-standing relationship with The Salvation Army.  The Salvation Army has been involved in every Reading Festival (except just one) since it moved to Reading in 1971.  This year they were on hand to provide their usual 24-hour service to Reading Festival goers, many of whom are away from home for their first festival experience.

Melvin Benn, Managing Director of Festival Republic said:  “I am proud to say that the modern Reading Festival has secured its legacy forever in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.  This is something for the whole of Reading to be proud of. I have enormous gratitude for the huge contribution made by the local community in making the event a continuing success and I am particularly delighted with our ongoing relationship with The Salvation Army, who I consider to be an essential part of the Reading line up! This year The Salvation Army were as popular as ever on site at Reading and we look forward to developing the food donation scheme in future years.”

Stuart Scott of The Salvation Army said: “2009 saw yet again another first in the now long standing relationship with the Salvation Army and the Reading Festival: The Food Drive. We were overwhelmed at the generosity of the fans and the help and cooperation from Festival Republic. The amount of non perishable food that we received was way above our expectations and we look forward to further successful years in the future. “

If you would like to volunteer your services to help pack food parcels on December 7th, please email your contact details to info@festivalrepublic.com

Date: Monday 7 December from 10am -2pm
Venue: The Salvation Army, Reading Central Corps, RG1 7JR

Reading Festival invites local businesses to take part in Economic Business Impact Assessment

Surveys have already been carried out at this year’s event with festival goers and traders.  Students from the University of Reading conducted over 2000 face to face surveys with festival goers which explored demographic profile, festival attendance and spending patterns. A face to face survey with traders, suppliers and promoters on site at the festival was also conducted by Baker Associates to understand business types, expenditure, staffing levels and supply chains.

The next step of the assessment is to ask local businesses how Reading Festival affects them in terms of employment, trading and turnover. We have commissioned Bristol based consultants Baker Associates to assess the festival’s economic impact.

The data derived from each of the above components will be fed into an economic impact model which estimates the impact of Reading Festival in terms of the investment it brings to the town and the jobs it helps to secure.  The results of the survey will be used to ensure the economic benefits of the Reading Festival are fully understood and capitalised on.

Baker Associates, Festival Republic and Reading UK CIC, the economic development company for Reading, are now inviting Reading businesses to take part in a short survey.  The more businesses that complete the short survey, the more accurate the results will be.  The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and businesses will also have the chance to win 2 race passes at Teamworks Karting.

Businesses can complete the survey by visiting: http://www.bakerassocs.com/reading_survey.php.

The deadline for completing the survey is 9 November.

Beware of Touts
We are aware that a number of tickets have been issued for this year’s festival by the site www.readingfestival2009.co m (and .net) and suspect that tickets have been issued by the site www.leedsfestival2009.co m (and .net).

Festival Republic highlighted these sites as unofficial throughout this year and made it clear that they are not a source for official tickets. Main Stage - Friday

Beginning late afternoon, teen favourites Fall Out Boy unleashed a swift, but raucous set on the gathering throngs. Placebo mellowed the atmosphere as night began to fall and the anticipation grew to fever pitch.

It was left to the Kaiser Chiefs to whip the crowd up into a frenzy with a typically popular set including the obligatory audience participatory version of ‘Oh My God’.

On a feast of a first day which culminated in a performance by headliners ‘Kings of Leon’, Reading Festival is sure to get even better over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Them Crooked Vultures
It could be argued that an appearance by Them Crooked Vultures at Reading Festival 2009 was the worst kept secret in rock n roll history. Having already made their debut performance in London in support of the Arctic Monkeys the Wednesday previous, rumours were rife that they would play become a certainty when they performed on the first day of Leeds Festival.

It wouldn’t be an over-exaggeration to say that half of the festival had turned out to see the rock super-group consisting of Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters, Josh Homme from Queens of the Stoneage, Alain Johannes of Sleep and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.

The band were clearly impressed with the turnout of punters and executed a neat, eclectic collection of material that few had heard before. It didn’t matter though, the crowd were completely mesmerized by the stature of the musicians before them – and the band played on.

Rise Against - The Lock Up Stage
Having to compete with headlining sets from Arctic Monkeys and Gossip is a tough job for most, but Tim McIllrath and co had no problems filling the tent until it was heaving - amass with sweaty bodies.

Concentrating on their latest record ‘Appeal to Reason’ the band ploughed through all three singles released from the record including ‘Audience of One’, ‘Saviour’ and ‘Re Education (Through Labour)’.

Rise Against continued to thrill the audience with rich, gravelly vocals and messages of unadulterated positivity.

Sun, 30 Aug 2009

The Living End - Main Stage
Aussie punk enthusiasts The Living End played the main stage for the very first time at Reading Festival this year. Brandishing their backline with a signature double-bass, the boys from down under kicked up a storm with an energetic, enigmatic swill of tunes from the back-catalogue of their impressive fifteen year span career.

Front-man Chris Cheney pulled his trademark party trick of downing a whole bottle of beer instantaneously and using the glass neck to fret-surf with vigour; much to the delight of the crowd.

Proving to be a rock n roll band with strong punk ethics, The Living End have bolstered themselves as a real force to be reckoned with.

WE TALK TO THE ALTERNATIVE STAGE MC

You’ve been compering the Alternative Stage all of today – who’s gone down the best?
AR: Well, so far comedian Adam Buxton has been fantastic – he has a very devout following.  Adam Bloom’s on at the moment and he’s marvellous. Roger Monkhouse, who’s a bit of an unknown, went down a storm earlier today.  I think Reading Festival specialises in booking the best acts.

Why is it so important to provide alternative entertainment like comedy and poetry at music festivals?

AR: It always astonishes me how much faith people have in the Alternative Stage.  They turn their backs on the euphoria and adrenaline rush of rock music to essentially see one man on a stage talk.  But here at Reading no-one's disappointed.  People always need a break from the self-analytical nature of some bands – so the Alternative Stage will always be busy!

Have you seen any bands?

I haven’t yet – but I cannot wait for Radiohead.  I saw them a little a while ago and I tried to chat up a woman there.  I said to her “Are you here alone?” She said “Well we’re essentially all alone, aren’t we?” Typical Radiohead fan!

Are there any new comedians who you think are going to make it big next year?  Are there any potential Michael McIntyres?

Well, Michael’s great.  But there are so many fantastic comedians who just aren’t as populist.  It’s all about taste -you can go to a tiny comedy club and have the time of your life.   Popularity is an over rated tool.  Go to the comedy clubs and don’t just wait for the big tours – the funniest people might not be the ones who are the most accessible to you.

Sun, 30 Aug 2009

Adam Buxton - The Alternative Stage
Music videos varied from Grip by zZz directed by Roel Wouters to Gifted by NASA featuring Kanye West and Santogold.

Animation was a small theme with Bad Ketchup by Ladyscraper directed by Dan Ghile and Wayne Adams and an imaginative opus from Adam Pesapane entitled Western Spaghetti

In keeping with the recession spirit there was the critical Cash in my pocket by Wiley. It was followed by the more hopeful Again and Again by The Bird and The Bee directed by Dennis Liu. After making the video Dennis went on to have much success in the advertising industry.

Adam included some of his own works including a Drum and Bass twist on Disney’s Ratatouille and in a pure plug the fan-vid for Spoon’s Don’t Make Me a Target.

Eliciting the biggest cheer was a small jab of fun at Sunday headliners Radiohead which worked the head of Thom York into the final dramatic scenes of the blockbuster Seven.

To complete his set Adam showed a small clip of himself, Joe and Louis Theroux messing around on video camera to Deelite’s Groove is in the Heart. The showing marked the 20th anniversary of the clip.

Sun, 30 Aug 2009

Brendon Burns
While providing a topical dig at chav culture, comic Brendon Burns inadvertently instigated a call to arms for the most middle class members of the afternoon audience.

Starting his diatribe on the cult of Jade Goody and the swell of demand on NHS for cervical cancer checks Burns proposed the world would be better off is the Goody fans dropped off the face of the earth. However he quickly back-tracked and mocked the crowd for their will to “kill a poor person”. He lampooned one group of young people who yelled out that it was time for a cull. According to Burns, Swine Flu couldn’t come at a better time for the snobs out there.

KAREN O GETS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE MIC
Karen O, in a multi-coloured jumpsuit, stroked intimate parts of her body with a tassel-laden microphone during a set based on album 'It’s Blitz'.

The flamboyant singer wrapped herself in a black and yellow shawl, sometimes completely covering her head, whilst singing 'Skeletons'.

Before launching into 'Zero' the New Yorkers had two giant inflatable eyeballs released into the crowd.

Dedicating the final song 'Date with a Night' to the people of Reading.  “Thanks for having us” she said “Stay right where you are for Bloc Party and Radiohead”.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

Brand New - Main stage
When Brand New took the main stage on the last day of Reading, it became suddenly apparent that front-man Jesse Lacey had boldly decided to expose his face - which is something of a rarity in the history of Brand New. Instead of being cloaked in a hood or hat, the audience were able to see the songwriter’s expressions as he played an emotive set.

Opening up with ‘Sowing Season’, Brand New set the mood for a tender, sombre afternoon performance simultaneously full of angst, but bittersweet with a flair of poetic flamboyance.

Clearly not shy of hiding his unbridled musical ability, Lacey preceeded to thrill the audience with some classic teeth-guitar-playing and ended the set, as always, with his band exiting early for him to finish playing the final song solo - and he in turn, leaving his guitar gentley weeping against a distorting amp.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

Gallows - NME / Radio 1 Stage

Back on home turf after returning from touring America all summer long, Gallows' show was very much a family affair, the band bringing their parents on stage momentarily and Rick Carter, the younger brother of Gallows boys Frank and Steph, joining the lads to sing the title track of their debut offering ‘Orchestra of Wolves’.

Not usually one to wear his heart on his sleeve, Frank even wept salty tears, closing the performance on what he described as ‘the best day of my life’.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

The Prodigy - Main Stage

The Prodigy transformed the Main Stage crowd into their own tribe of warriors on Saturday night. They delivered a piece of techno wizardry which delighted, excited and sent their fans into euphoria.

In what may have been one of the biggest crowds the festival has ever seen Keith Flint snarled his way through set favourites ‘Firestarter’ and ‘Breathe’ as well as newer tracks ‘Omen’ and ‘Take Me to the Hospital’.

Finishing off with a rip-roaring performance of ‘Out Of Space’ The Prodigy ensured their set will be marked as one of the “moments” of Reading 2009.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

Radiohead - Main Stage
Radiohead closed the 2009 Reading Festival with an elegant two hour headlining performance on the main stage.  Opening with their first ever single release, ‘Creep’ from 1992’s ‘Pablo Honey’, they played a varied set; a collection of songs from every era of their nearly quarter-century career.

‘Karma Police’, ‘There, There’ and ‘Exit Music', were amongst those played out - the crowed glued to the side-stage screens broadcasting every member in distorted  five way shots.

As one of the only bands of the festival requiring zero crowd-participation and hardly speaking to their devotees; Radiohead stood majestic and let their music speak for itself.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

The Gaslight Anthem - NME / Radio 1 Stage
Tackling their lack of sleep with a profusion of coffee was apparently a wise move for The Gaslight Anthem as they geared up to play their second consecutive Reading Festival. Bringing their distinctive retro, rock n roll sound straight from the New Jersey shores, the band took no time at all to rip into tracks from their hit album ‘The 59 Sound’.

Intent on breaking the fourth wall, front man Brian Fallon entertained spectators  with random anecdotes in between romanticising the entire NME/Radio 1 Stage with the combination of passionate lyrics and echoey plate reverb vocals. Breaking into a verse of BB Kings ’Stand By Me’, The Gaslight Anthem prove to be a sensationally unpredictable, and startlingly unique act.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

Arctic Monkeys - Main Stage

Sheffield’s own Arctic Monkeys headlined Day 2 on the Main Stage with a set heavily reliant on tracks from their third studio album ‘Humbug’. The crowd responded well to the new material with lead singer Alex Turner remarking: “Thank you Reading. It’s a pleasure to be here!”

Predictably the noise levels were lifted for ‘I Bet That You Looked Good on the Dancefloor’ and ‘Brianstorm’ before the boys slowed things down with ‘Cornerstone’ and ‘Do Me a Favour’.

After topping the evening with a smooth rendition of ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ the band were willed to return to the stage by an appreciative crowd and added ‘Secret Door’ and ‘505’ to an already impressive performance.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

Spinnerette - NME / Radio 1 Stage
Spinnerette are no strangers to British audiences having toured the UK twice this year in promotion of their self-titled debut album.

A mere glimpse of Brody Dalle on stage in the NME/Radio 1 tent sporting a black baseball cap and sunglasses is enough to send the crowd into a frenzy as she tunes her guitar.

Dancing around in flowery wellies, Mrs Joshua Homme succeeded in warming up the seemingly tepid audience with an abundance of new material including the relentlessly bassy first single release, ‘Ghetto Love’. Gulping beer throughout the set she leaves audience with an afterthought, "I hope your day gets better, I know mine will".

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

BROKEN STRINGS DON'T HOLD BACK NOAH AND THE WHALE

Just before the London-folk ensemble launched into their final song the string on Tom Hobden’s violin spilt.  This didn't stop the rest of the band wowing the crowd with songs from their new album "The First Days of Spring" - out tomorrow.

Playing on the windiest day of the festival compere Huw Stephens said the band would "warm the cockles of your heart".  If the constant arm waving and cheering is anything to go by it certainly seems they did.

The band departed from their usual acoustic style with "Blue Skies" and "Love of An Orchestra" which had a more electric feel.

Sat, 29 Aug 2009

Eagles of Death Metal - Main Stage

The Reading Festival crowd were joined by a special guest spectator during the Eagles of Death Metal Main Stage set as it was revealed that Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl had joined the party.

The festival-goers, who were already buzzing from a killer set, erupted into applause as the former Nirvana drummer was shown on the big screens.

Earlier in the set Eagles’ singer Jesse Hughes declared: “Out of all the festivals we’ve played this year, you guys are the best!”

From the riotous reception they received it’s certain that everyone in front of the Main Stage echoes his sentiments.

Fri, 28 Aug 2009

Patrick Wolf - NME / Radio 1 Stage

Patrick Wolf glammed it up on stage for his set at the NME / Radio 1 Stage. Strutting out in a monochrome, glam-rock, ensemble complete with union jack design he thrilled the crowd striking pose after pose then shimmying those giant shoulder puffs and cape. Shrugging off the accoutrements he revealed the sleeveless one piece and more of the toned body he’s developed. There was also a costume change mid set into a tight, golden, lame set which seemed to fit awkwardly but made the audience whoop in joy.

In typical Wolf style and in an inspired moment, he mounted the tent rigging and climbed half way-up unassisted for Damaris. Maybe the vertigo made him feel a little funny because he then confessed he had vomited a little bit on centre-stage.

Finally, Wolf frankly recalled the bad times he had at school and reported “I used to come to Reading Festival and lose myself for 4 days”. He wished everyone an upturn for 2010 after a terrible recession year. The set was complete with a splicing of Madonna’s 'Like a Virgin' and his own hit 'The Magic Position'.

Skint & Demoralised

Former performance pub poet Matt Skint exuded confidence as he breezed through a range of topics from politics, nights out in Yorkshire and Leeds United’s chances of promotion this season.

The set was also very much a family affair as Skint paused throughout the set to wish Happy Birthday to sister Rosie who’d journeyed from Dublin to see her big brother wow the festival crowd.

Fri, 28 Aug 2009

Kate Tempest - The Alternative Stage
Kate Tempest repesented her sex as the only female spoken-word star in the weekend line up.

Her quick flowing rhymes and points of politics scored highly with the mellow, early audience.

She raised the bar for female rappers and poured scorn on sexist detractors. She has been a highlight during the 2009 festival circuit and with many years in front of her looks set for success.

KOL & FNM

Perhaps the most successful band in the world this year, and with a stunning set including all the anthems from multi-platinum selling album ‘Only by the Night’, the Kings of Leon ripped up the Main Stage. It was the icing on the cake for an evening that included a bumper hit-laden set from the Kaiser Chiefs earlier on.

Over at the NME / Radio 1 Stage, the audience for Faith No More grew steadily as Mike Patton and co eventually took to the stage, a little over schedule. Dressed head to toe in red, Patton and the band stormed through a vintage set that took fans back to years past with hits including 'Epic', 'Ashes To Ashes' and 'Last Cup Of Sorrow'.

'Easy' was a welcome return and they added their own rendition of the Eastenders theme tune for equal measure. It's good to have them back after more than 12 years.

RADIO 1 DJ'S NIHAL AND DEV TALK TO US

Who have you managed to catch at the festival so far?
D: I’ve just seen Enter Shikari – they were awesome. I’ve been spending most of my time at the Alternative Stage – there are some absolutely brilliant comedians there.  It’s so important having that sort of entertainment at a festival.   But Enter Shikari – the best.

N: I’ve seen Enter Shikari twice today – it’s the only band I’ve managed to see so far! This festival atmosphere all seems so quiet to me – I’ve left my two kids with the wife and being here is fantastic piece and quiet!

So who do you think are the next Enter Shikari?
N: That band are concentrated raw energy.  They sometimes can have three or four songs within one song.  I’m not sure if there is anyone who can match that.  In the dance world mstrkrft and Chase and Status are hotting up.
D: I’ve heard a lot about Pulled Apart By Horses.  I’m going to run about in a second and find out if I can see them.  And The xx tomorrow – I’ve heard fantastic things.

Who else are you going to see before the day is out?
D: I cannot leave without seeing The Prodigy and The Arctic Monkeys.  I was hoping to see Alex in the backstage bit – but I think he’s just too cool for that!  If I do see If I do see him I’m asking him for a little fan photo!

Municipal Waste - Lock Up Stage
Having released their fourth album ‘Massive Aggressive’ just days previously, Municipal Waste were in fine spirits to showcase their new material to a tent of unhinged, inebriated thrashers.

Commanding a circle-pit that had the potential to cause utter destruction – the Waste tore into a set consisting of shots of speedy party tunes, ‘Terror Shark’, ‘Wrong Answer’ and ‘Beer Pressure’, amongst many more.

Paying homage to their idols, Slayer, they decided to finish the show with none other than their trademark anthem ‘Born to Party’, sending the crowd off in different directions with one definitive message "Municipal Waste are gonna f*ck you up!".

Fri, 28 Aug 2009

Faith No More - NME / Radio1 Stage
The 30 minute delay due to technical difficulties didn't stop Faith No More at the NME / Radio 1 Stage, as the headliners on the first night of Reading Festival.

Bursting on stage with their take of the theme from Midnight Cowboy, (which is becoming somewhat of a trademark since their reunion) Faith No More did anything but disappoint their alternative fans with a visceral and often manic performance.

Randomly covering the Eastenders theme tune, Mike Patton and Co cemented their erratic, eccentric and genius image with their fourth UK appearance of 2009.

BIRTHDAY GIRL FLORENCE REACHES NEW HIGHS ON STAGE

Florence Welch, who turned 23 today, climbed pillars to the side of the stage during hit single 'Kiss with a Fist'. After being helped down by security staff she told the roaring crowd “I said I’d get high at Reading.  I think I just did”.

After playing her cover of Candi Stanton’s “You Got The Love” Florence ended the set with “Cosmic Love”.  She confessed this was her favourite song from album Lungs.

Florence and the Machine played a secret gig earlier today on the BBC Introducing Stage after the unsuspecting crowd sang Happy Birthday.

Kinch - BBC Introducing Stage

The young four piece from Leeds brought the crowd to life with a catchy set including the Kooks-esque ‘Philosophy’, which justified comparisons which have been drawn between the two bands.

The highlight of the set was undoubtedly ‘Falling Apart’ a fun, melodic number which lifted everyone to their feet when Kinch dissolved into a cheeky cover of Kate Nash’s ‘Foundations’. The boys looked pleased with their efforts on a first jaunt outside Yorkshire and drew a generous response from the festival crowd.

Thu, 27 Aug 2009

Little Boots - NME / Radio 1 Stage

Little Boots was almost choked up with tears as her Friday afternoon set on the NME/Radio 1 Stage culminated at the Reading Festival. The pint-sized beauty told fans: “Thank you so much. This has been one of the best moments of my year!”

Recent smash hit ‘Remedy’ topped a popular track list taken from her ‘Hands’ album. The performance drew a huge crowd and is the latest of a barrage of success stories during Little Boots’ breakthrough year.

Chad Gilbert chats to us

How did the set go earlier?
CG: It was fantastic.  A lot of dirt.  If you see a lot of dirt fly in the air you know it went well.  It was our first year on the main stage - it was amazing.

Do you prefer festivals to gigs?
CG: Well I love gigs because they're so intimate but festivals - they're just like one big party! There was a really big barricade today which we're not used to at our shows- so that was amazing.  We ran down to the barracade.  Getting to the front of those kids is really important to me and the rest of the band.

What song gave you the biggest reaction from the crowd?
CG:Well,  "My Friends Over You" always goes down really well.  We played it last - we know it's a song the kids like.  No matter where and when we play it - it makes everyone go crazy.

What other bands do you want to catch today?
CG:I really wanna see Faith No More - I'm going to get right to the front when they come on.

Will you be back next year?
CG:For sure - it's raining and muddy but lots of fun.

Placebo - Main Stage

Bearing a mop of platinum blond locks, a tanned toned bod and more tattoos than the whole of Guns n' Roses – Steve Forrest is a real contrast against his dark-haired, make-up adorned band mates, Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal.

Placebo’s set consisted of a selection of old and new tracks including the coyly titled ‘Special K’ from ‘Black Market Music’, the classic audience-pleaser ‘Every Me and Every You’ of ‘Without You, I’m Nothing’ and the title track of their latest album ‘Battle for the Sun’.

World Leaders Go Wild

ActionAid are inviting festival goers to experience being world leaders for the night. Brush off the mud, slip into a suit and party like you mean business. The 'World Leaders Go Wild' Party is being organised to highlight the fact that politicians need to curb their wild ways and get down to the business of stopping runaway climate change.

Climate change already kills 300,000 people a year and is causing millions of people to go hungry. At the ActionAid tent you'll also be able to send a photo of yourself to the UK government with the message 'make Copenhagen count', demanding the government take the right action when they meet world leaders at the climate summit in Copenhagen this December, and ensure we face a future of food not dust.

ActionAid hope to get hundreds of revellers dressed up as world leaders in their tent on Thursday night. They will be handing out world leader masks and suit jackets for festival goers to slip into. While DJ's provide the party tunes revellers can sip their beer out of champagne flutes, nibble on fine chocolate and go wild!

To take part go to the ActionAid tent, just outside the main arena at 8pm

Lostprophets headline the NME/R1 tent

Lostprophets return with two very special intimate festival appearances giving fans an exclusive preview of their long awaited fourth album.

The band will headline the NME/Radio 1 tent at the Reading & Leeds Festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 29th August at Leeds and Sunday 30th at Reading.

The band last toured the UK in 2007 and have been working flat out in the UK and US on their highly anticipated follow up to the number one album ‘Liberation Transmission’. Vocalist Ian Watkins commented, “We’ve been dying to come back to the UK and play and when we realised the timing meant we could make it Reading & Leeds we jumped at the chance as it’s got the most amazing memories for us. We also thought, rather than playing on the main stage we could get in the tent and see the whites of the eyes of the fans down the front, and get their first hand reaction to the new songs. It’ll be amazing.”

We are immensely thrilled to welcome Lostprophets back to Reading and Leeds Festivals in a very special up-close setting. They have always been a huge hit with fans at both sites and have performed some legendary shows. Lostprophets and shows like this are what Reading and Leeds are all about.

Look after your wristband

Everyone on site must wear a wristband, and if yours is damaged or lost you may not be able to enter the arena and/or may be required to leave the site.

1.  Ensure your wristband is secure.  The clasp should be firmly in place and not slipping up or down.  The wristband must not be loose so check it cannot slip over your wrist.

2. Do not tamper with your wristband in any way.  The wristband often has loose ends which many are tempted to cut or burn off.  Do not do this.  If the ends are tampered with it increases the likelihood of losing your wristband as the ends may fray and/or can slip out of the clasp more easily.  Most wristbands have a warning which says “void if removed” and the promoter has the right to refuse entry if a wristband has been tampered with.

3. Do not tie knots or add anything to your wristband.  All bands are checked each time you enter the arena and at various checkpoints around the site.  Knots, plasters, tape etc. on your band will have to be removed to check the band properly and this will cause delays to you and others at the entrance.  Some people may be sensitive to the metal on some clasps.  If this is the case, do not put tape on the wristband, but protect your skin with hypoallergenic tape instead.

4. Keep your wristband safe.  Even if a wristband appears secure it may still be lost or stolen especially if you get involved in lively crowd activity, “moshing” etc.  The best way to keep your wristband safe, and to prevent the loose ends snagging or annoying you, is to wear an elasticated/towelling sweatband over the top or a long sleeved top with elasticated cuffs.  This way you will keep it safe but you will still be able to show it at checkpoints easily.

5. What if you have a problem?  As soon as you realise you have a problem, lost, damaged band etc. you must get help.  If you are outside the arena, go to the nearest wristband exchanges tent where someone will help and advise you.  When you get to the wristband exchange look for, and ask for, the Gate manager.  If you are inside the arena, do not leave, go to the arena entrance and, without leaving the arena, ask for the supervisor who will be able to help.

6.  Wristbands remain the property of Festival Republic until 12 noon Bank Holiday Monday August.

ALL TICKETS SOLD OUT

Melvin Benn, MD of Festival Republic, said of the dual sell out:

This is the 7th year in succession that both events have sold out within 24 hours of going on sale and I am very very pleased of course. The stature of the events have grown and grown each year and this year’s line up only adds to that. However, I must express caution towards all those who will now try to get their hands on tickets in whatever way they can as they do need to be careful of dodgy sites. The only site I can recommend will be viagogo who will at least guarantee anything they sell.”

The world famous Reading and Leeds Festival takes place from Friday 28th August to Sunday 30th August 2009.

Headliners this year are The Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead and Kings Of Leon. For more details on the bill and further information on the event please visit www.readingfestival.com / www.leedsfestival.com.

CAMPERVANS AND CARAVANS

In order to maintain the integrity of the caravan and campervan field in white zone camp and also because it has been many years since we raised the price of a caravan and campervan permit these will increase to £20 in advance, and £30 on the gate for 2009

We have written new terms and conditions for anyone planning to bring a campervan or caravan to the event to sleep in and please see the campervan section for those. It basically means that you can only bring proper sleeping vehicles to the event to sleep in. No white vans or any other vehicle that simply has a mattress in will do!

All campervans and caravans will be going into the white campsite again this year, not red.  Your vehicle may be searched and disallowed items confiscated.  Please see our confiscation policy.

Click here to read T&Cs and ensure your vehicle complies.

Book online at www.seetickets.com/readingandleeds

FOR GUESTS & DISABLED CUSTOMERS:
All caravans / campervans require a pass which you will need to purchase from us in advance. Please email guestcampervans@festivalrepublic.com
